GivingTuesday, November 28, 2023, will soon be upon us. We hope you will consider donating to The Aged Woman’s Home in this season of giving.
Madeline, our newest Guest, arrived at the Home this past Monday, just in time for Thanksgiving. Madeline describes herself as “overjoyed, speechless, overwhelmed, very happy, and feeling so much joy to have found such a beautiful new home.”
Originally from South Africa, Madeline had visited her daughter in the U.S. several times and decided shortly after 9-11 to move here permanently. She held a variety of jobs through the years, mainly as a caregiver for the children of a deployed American soldier.
Madeline described her first night’s sleep at the Home, after several months in a hotel, as a “beautiful and peaceful sleep.” “I felt safe,” she said,” on a new bed, with new linens. I love my view out the window looking at the garden.”
As is the case with many senior women, Madeline does not make enough money to afford market-rate rent. At the Home, where Guests live at no charge, she will be able to use her personal funds to purchase food, transportation, clothes, and other necessary items, maybe even a treat and coffee occasionally at the Patisserie Poupon Bakery located a few blocks north of the Home on Wisconsin Avenue. She also plans to search for a part-time job to help cover expenses.
Madeline loves cooking, walking, listening to music, reading, conversation, the company of others, and a few of her favorite shows. We hope that once she gets settled in, she might introduce us to a South African dish or two. Some delicious recipes include a pickled fish, spicy curry, or a stew with an aromatic combination of cinnamon, cardamom, coriander, and chilis working overtime on our olfactory cells and taste buds. She says, “I like to cook spicy.”
The Board of Directors, Staff, and all of those who volunteer and contribute to the Home throughout the year are happy our newest Guest has found us. We look forward to sharing Thanksgiving with her as she settles in and becomes a long-term member of our community.
