We asked Christina what she likes about living at the Home and this is what she shared with us.

Coming to the Aged Woman’s Home was a miracle.

I was looking for work in Georgetown, and I came across a plaque on the door at the Aged Woman’s Home. I had previous experience working in a senior setting so I knocked on the door because I was desperate for work. The House Administrator answered the door and her words were, “I am sorry — we do not hire activity directors. We are a Home for under income seniors.”

At that point I felt like I would fall down the stairs. I said, “I’m under income and I am a senior and I am desperate for housing.” Erin invited me in and we had a conversation.

I had to wait until I was 62 to apply — as I was only 61 and a half. At the time I was living in a terrible situation.

I am very very grateful to The Aged Woman’s Home for allowing me the gift of being able to get back on my feet. The Home has allowed to me to gain stability — and I obtained a job that I like very much. I have paid off a lot of my bills. I hope to one day have my own home again. Living at the Home has resolved many of my challenges — housing being the most stressful one. My room is truly my palace and my sanctuary.

Meanwhile, I have started a yoga and meditation class at the Home. I enjoy helping care for the garden and doing my own design crafts. I have found a way to make friends with everyone that lives here. I really appreciate that the management is open and supportive. I am very, very grateful for the opportunity to put my life back together. And to the Board and managers for being so open to my ideas and my personal growth. I feel like they are cheerleaders for my happiness.

One of my favorite things about living at the Home is the way I have fixed up my room,  and my view of the charming garden with the fountain, fish pond, and birds. I love living in Georgetown. I am always meeting friends for coffee or an evening sitting outside. I am able to walk to work. And when I need transportation, it is very convenient. I love walking the streets of Georgetown looking at the beautiful old homes.

I love the privacy of my own room. It is delightful. Patsy and other Board Members have made our Home beautiful and in keeping with the interior flavor of the Home’s historic nature.
